Sendero Energy Services Secures 150MW Renewable Energy Project in Sulphur Springs, Texas: Introducing the Cartwheel BESS, Substation, and Switch Yard

Sendero Energy Services (SES) is excited to announce our latest project award, the Cartwheel Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), Substation, and Switch Yard in Sulphur Springs, Texas.

Cartwheel BESS, Substation, Switch Yard

This project marks a significant milestone for SES as we expand our footprint in the renewable energy sector, supporting the ongoing transition to sustainable energy solutions.

Project Overview: A Key Step Toward a Sustainable Future

The Cartwheel BESS project, with a capacity of 150MW, is a critical development in the growing landscape of energy storage and renewable infrastructure. Located in Sulphur Springs, Texas, within Hopkins County, this project is part of a broader initiative spearheaded by the developer RWE and our client RES to bolster the reliability and efficiency of the regional electrical grid.

As a Battery Energy Storage System, the Cartwheel project will play a pivotal role in storing excess energy generated from renewable sources, such as solar and wind. This stored energy can be released during periods of high demand, ensuring a stable and consistent power supply. Including a substation and switch yard further underscores the project's importance in efficiently managing and distributing this energy across the grid.

SES Scope of Work: Precision in Civil Construction

Our team, led by SES Project Manager Matthew Minshew, will deliver the civil site work required to bring this project to life. The scope of work includes:

  • Traffic Control, Signage, and Street Sweeping: Ensuring safe and efficient traffic flow around the construction site.

  • Construction Water for Dust Control & Compaction: Maintaining optimal site conditions through effective dust suppression and soil compaction.

  • Erosion Control Maintenance: Protecting the site from erosion throughout the project.

  • Access Road Maintenance: Keeping all site access roads in prime condition for moving materials and equipment.

  • Survey, Construction Staking, and Drone Topography: Using advanced surveying techniques and precise construction staking to guide all aspects of civil construction. Additionally, we will employ drone technology to capture detailed topographical data before and after construction. This allows us to monitor changes in the landscape, ensure accuracy in grading and earthwork, and provide our client with a clear visual record of the site’s transformation.

  • Site Preparation: This involves stripping and spreading 8,000 cubic yards of existing topsoil and preparing 64,000 square yards of subgrade for the BESS, substation, and switch yard.

  • Grading and Fill: Grading work includes cutting and filling 21,000 cubic yards of material and importing 24,900 cubic yards of fill for various site features.

  • Limestone Work Surface: Applying a 6-inch limestone work surface across 7,500 cubic yards of the site.

  • Road and Structural Components: Subgrade preparation for access roads, installation of HDPE pipes, concrete overflow, trickle channels, soil retention blankets, and rock rip rap slope protection.

  • Environmental Protection: Installation of silt fencing and seeding for site restoration upon project completion.

Building the Future with Renewable Energy

The Cartwheel BESS, Substation, and Switch Yard project aligns perfectly with our mission at SES to drive progress in the renewable energy sector through high-quality civil construction services. Our work on this project not only enhances the infrastructure needed for renewable energy storage and distribution but also contributes to the broader goal of reducing carbon emissions and fostering a more sustainable energy future.

We are proud to collaborate with RES and RWE on this transformative project and look forward to successfully delivering the civil site work that will lay the foundation for the Cartwheel BESS. As we embark on this new venture, we reaffirm our commitment to excellence, safety, and sustainability in every project we undertake.
